How billing works when you upgrade or downgrade your FoxSell plan
Shopify handles FoxSell Bundles billing through your Shopify invoice. That means plan changes are approved in Shopify, then Shopify calculates any prorated charge or credit based on where you are in your billing cycle.
Quick version
- Upgrades: you get access to the higher plan after approving it, and Shopify charges the prorated difference for the remaining time in the current cycle.
- Downgrades: Shopify applies the lower plan after approval and automatically creates a prorated app credit for the unused portion of the higher plan.
- Next cycle: your next full billing cycle uses the new plan price.
- Billing cycle: monthly app subscriptions are billed on Shopify's 30-day app billing cycle. Annual plans are billed yearly.
How the proration math works
For monthly plan changes, the simple way to think about it is:
Price difference × days remaining in the billing cycle ÷ 30
Shopify does the final calculation and shows it on your Shopify bill, so the exact invoice timing can depend on your Shopify billing date.
Example 1: Upgrading from Pro to Scale mid-cycle
Let's say you are on Pro at $49/month and upgrade to Scale at $149/month with 15 days left in your current 30-day cycle.
- Difference between plans: $149 - $49 = $100
- Time left in cycle: 15 of 30 days
- Prorated current-cycle charge: $100 × 15 ÷ 30 = $50
What you see now: Shopify adds about $50 as the prorated upgrade amount for the rest of the current cycle.
What you see next cycle: your next full cycle renews at $149/month.
Example 2: Upgrading from Scale to Growth near the end of the cycle
Let's say you are on Scale at $149/month and upgrade to Growth at $249/month with 6 days left.
- Difference between plans: $249 - $149 = $100
- Time left in cycle: 6 of 30 days
- Prorated current-cycle charge: $100 × 6 ÷ 30 = $20
What you see now: Shopify adds about $20 for the remainder of the current cycle.
What you see next cycle: your next full cycle renews at $249/month.
Example 3: Downgrading from Growth to Scale mid-cycle
Let's say you are on Growth at $249/month and downgrade to Scale at $149/month with 15 days left.
- Difference between plans: $249 - $149 = $100
- Time left in cycle: 15 of 30 days
- Prorated credit: $100 × 15 ÷ 30 = $50
What you see now: Shopify issues about $50 as an app credit for the unused portion of the higher plan.
What you see next cycle: your next full cycle renews at $149/month.
Example 4: Downgrading from Scale to Pro with only a few days left
Let's say you are on Scale at $149/month and downgrade to Pro at $49/month with 3 days left.
- Difference between plans: $149 - $49 = $100
- Time left in cycle: 3 of 30 days
- Prorated credit: $100 × 3 ÷ 30 = $10
What you see now: Shopify issues about $10 as an app credit.
What you see next cycle: your next full cycle renews at $49/month.
What happens to credits?
App credits are handled by Shopify, not directly by FoxSell. When Shopify creates an app credit, it is applied through your Shopify billing account and can offset eligible Shopify app charges on your invoice.
If your invoice total is smaller than the credit, Shopify may carry the remaining credit forward according to Shopify's billing rules.
Annual plan changes
Annual billing can behave differently from monthly billing:
- Monthly to annual or lower annual to higher annual: Shopify may prorate the change based on the remaining time and the new approved charge.
- Annual to monthly, or annual to a lower-priced annual plan: Shopify may defer the new lower plan until the current annual billing period ends.
Because annual plan changes can depend on Shopify's billing rules and the exact plan switch, we recommend checking the approval screen carefully before confirming. Shopify shows the charge you are approving before the change is applied.
Where to check the final amount
You can review app charges in your Shopify admin under Settings > Billing. Shopify's approval screen and billing page are the source of truth for the exact current-cycle charge, credit, and next-cycle amount.
If something looks different from what you expected, message us from the FoxSell app and we will help you read through the charge.
